The College is pleased to announce that Luca Vanzago, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Pavia has accepted to act as Director of Studies in Philosophy at Collegio A Volta.
With L Vanzago's appointment, College hopes to attract undergraduate and MSc students reading Philosophy at the University and will promote further the College work in the areas of History and Philosophy of Science, a key interest at Volta.
Luca Vanzago is Professor of Theoretical Philosophy, and a member of the Department of Humanities. His main fields of research are Phenomenology, Process Thought, Contemporary Philosophy of Mind and Consciousness, and the Epistemology of Pain and Suffering. He has widely published in Italy and abroad. Among his publications, the books Modi del tempo (2001), L’evento del tempo (2004), Coscienza e alterità (2007), Breve storia dell’anima (2009), Merleau-Ponty (20012), Coscienza (2013) (with Faustino Savoldi and Mauro Ceroni, 2013), The Voice of No One (in press).

Medical Schools
Andy Chamberlain of Cambridge Assessment will give a seminar on Tuesday the 30th of June at 3.00 pm in the Division of Human Genetics (14 via C Forlanini) on Admission tests for Medical Schools fit for the future. All College students and in particular medical students are invited to attend.
Admission to Medical Schools is a major challenge as all countries all over the world need to ensure that future doctors have the background knowledge and the human skills that the study and practice of medicine require. Cambridge Assessment have developed several of the admission tests used in the United Kingdom (BioMedical Admission Test, BMAT, and the International Medical Admission Test, IMAT) and in this seminar Andy Chamberlain will discuss the format of current admission tests and their future requirements and development.
Cambridge Assessment is a not-for-profit organisation established as the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES) by the University of Cambridge in 1858. It operates and manages the University's three exam boards Cambridge English Language Assessment, Cambridge International Examinations and the Oxford, Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Examinations) and carries out leading-edge academic and operational research on assessment in education. It designs and delivers assessments to over 8 million learners in over 170 countries and is committed to fairness, a sound ethical underpinning and high technical standards and, in the academic year 2013/14, brought income for £ 317 millions to the University of Cambridge.
Job Requests
The online procedure for job requests (repairs and maintenance to room, kitchen or communal areas) is back and working. The recent transfer of the College website to the Hypergrid server caused difficulties with the procedure but skilled and dedicated efforts by yr 5 medical undergraduate - and College IT support - Guy Alex Ochakovski have re-enabled the system.
Job requests are available on the College intranet accessible from the home page and requires an additional username and password. Students who do not have this additional username and password may obtain it by emailing Alex and should use this procedure for future, non urgent requests for repairs and maintenance.
Urgent requests must be submitted to the College Office during office hours, to the Porter on duty outside office hours and via the emergency telephone numbers between 1.00 am and 7.00 am (weekdays) and on Sunday and other festivities. Emergency t numbers are available on the ground floor corridor near the College Office, adjacent the door leading to the entrance hall.

I am a Civil Engineer having obtained my Bachelor Degree at the University of Parma (Italy) in 2012 with the highest marks and I am currently enrolled in the PhD School of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. Regarding my education, I started my Civil Engineering Degree in September 2006, qualifying as a Civil Engineer (2009) and then specialising in Structural Engineering (2012). Regarding my professional activities, after finishing my degree I left Italy for New York City in order to attend an internship focused on the design of certain buildings, mainly situated in the City. Through this opportunity, I met Professor Ilan Juran, the Executive Director of the Department of Urban Infrastructure Institute at NYU-Poly, who gave me the chance to listen to some lectures related to Urban Engineering. Thereafter, I understood how the main thing for me was to put together my Structural Engineering education with the issues of sustainable development and economic feasibility of the fast growing urban centers. Thus I have started my research investigating the issue of contamination in water systems and water monitoring systems.

Undergraduate Teaching
Teaching is an essential component of College life and, at Volta, takes different shapes and roles. College courses, seminars, meetings, workshops and symposia represent fundamental aspects of College teaching beyond the one offered by University Department and all College students are strongly encouraged to take every opportunity to participate in these activities. In addition, Volta promotes teaching of specific subjects involving University lecturers who offer guidance to College undergraduatea - thus acting as Directors of Studies - and Junior Tutors who deliver the main type of College teaching, namely supervisions and who offer general, informal and critical advice on how to survive in the complex landscape of Courses and Examinations typical of Italian Universities.
