Transatlantic Austerity 2010-13. A Comparative Analysis
The seminar will take place in the College lecture theatre at 6.00 pm. The poster can be downloaded here.
The third lecture of the Volta series on The Financial Crisis, will address the role of fiscal policies, and specifically of fiscal austerity policies in the aftermath of the financial crisis. The different fiscal policies adopted by European countries and the USA in the years 2010-13, have enabled a comparative analysis of their impact on public finances, economic performance, employment, etc. R Tamborini's thorough analysis demonstrates, against prevaling dogma, that fiscal austerity failed to improve public finances and promote economic recovery. The recession is not over yet in many countries and most notatbly across European countries. R Tamborini's study therefore is not only of academic interest but contains fundamental and practical lessons for current and future policy makimg.
Roberto Tamborini is Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Trento and was formerly Professor of Economics at the University of Padua. His research interests are mainly concentrated on macroeconomic theories and policies, money and financial markets, policies and institutions. He is a contributor to the online economic website RoubiniGlobalEconomics, founded by Nouriel Roubini. More information about R Tamborini' work can be found here (in Italian).
Transatlantic Austerity
In the third talk of the Volta series on the The Financial Crisis R Tamborini, on Monday 17th November at 6.00 pm , undertakes a thorough comparative analysis of fiscal policies after the Great Recession of 2008-09. The poster of the seminar can be downloaded here.
While fiscal austerity after the recession was common, the extent of it varied considerably from country to country and - argues R Tamborini - comparison is informative. He measured both fiscal austerity and its impact on public finances, interest rates, economic output and employment and, against prevaling dogma, his analysis demonstrates that fiscal austerity failed to improve public finances and promote economic recovery.
Trainspotting
The first film of the new Volta Cine Club series tackling Addiction will be on show on Monday, 17th November at 7.30 pm. Trainspotting, directed by D Boyle, and starring E McGregor, E Bremner, J Lee Miller and others.
Based on I Welsh’s novel, the film follows a group of heroin addicts in a late 1980s economically depressed area of Edinburgh and their passage through life. Beyond drug addiction, the film explores urban poverty and squalor in "culturally rich" Edinburgh. The film has been ranked as the best Scottish film ever and the 10th best best British film ever.
Students' Welfare
The College wishes to inform its members that the students' welfare service due to start early in November - but delayed in the process - is now active. Details of the service remain as published below in the original post. The College hopes that its students will make use of this important service.
Original Post
The Centro Orientamento (COR) of the University of Pavia and EdISU have joined efforts in order to offer a counselling and support service to students based at Collegio A Volta and other EdISU Colleges. Collegio A Volta is pleased that this students’ welfare service (SWS) has been introduced and had actively requested EdISU to provide a students’ welfare service in November/December 2013 and the following is an outline of what the service entails:
Who, where and when
The service will be provided by Consuelo Traviglia, a psychologist working for EdISU/COR and will be based in College. Day and hours of SWS are Tuesdays in term time (no service on official University holiday dates) between 5.15 and 6.45 pm in the College board room (ground floor, adjacent the main entrance hall; freshers unsure about the location of the board room should ask the porter for directions). Students can either turn up at the door - and wait in the entrance hall if Consuelo is busy with other students or, preferably, write to Consuelo Traviglia at <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.; in order to book an appointment. Both individual and group appointments are welcome. Individual matters are treated in confidence.
Scope
The scope of SWS is wide and covers:
Pastoral. Any personal issue that concerns students’ well being and college life fall under the remit of SWS. Examples include difficulties in liasing with other members of the College community, family problems (parent’s divorce, illness, etc), eating habits, sex life, alcohol and drugs related problems, etc.
Financial. Financial difficulties during a student’s life at University may arise from a variety of causes. Parents’ divorce, unemployment, illness or death are the most common ones. All these may jeopardise University careers and students affected should seek help via SWS. Students may also like to know that Collegio Volta requested EdISU in November/December 2013 and again in October 2014 to set up an Emergency Fund to provide extra financial support to students facing financial hardship. A Collegiate system must have an Emergency Fund providing support at unexpected and sudden times of hardship and the College is confident that EdISU will implement such a fund. Meanwhile, students in need should not hesitate reporting their circumstances and requesting help.
Academic. Students at Volta enjoy extensive and comprehensive academic support ranging from: (i) Course guidance, Course change and general career advice offered by the Volta Directors of Studies, (ii) supervisions on a range of subjects (Maths, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Genetics, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pathology) offered by Volta Senior Tutors and, (iii) general study advice offered by the Volta Junior Tutors(submission of study plans, exam time tabling, choice of textbooks and access to other teaching material). The scope of the SWS, however, extend to academic matters and students of Collegio Volta should feel free to discuss the as well with SWS if they see it appropriate.
Questionnaire
In the leaflet that was circulated announcing SWS there is mention of a students’ questionnaire on welfare issue. The College will provide further details about this when these will be received.

Study Plans
The College realises that the University procedures for access/submission of students study plans is a very slow one. The procedure is enabled from November 11th for a number of Courses or even in December for others. This is clearly an area in which the University needs to improve.
The College would like to thank the many students who have already submitted their study plans and the many students who have written explaining that their plans are delayed by the University time table. These students may submit their plans as soon as they are able to do so. Notwithstanding the delays, College hopes to have, before the Christmas break, a full layout of the academic work of the members of Volta for the academic year 2014/15.
The College is also pleased to see that a number of students have table a strong exam list at the end of semester 1. This is a strategy that College strongly encourages in order to avoid a credit gap in the summer and College would like to thank the Volta Junior Tutors for their contribution in guiding the academic progress of College freshers.
Inception
The 4th and last film of the series on Reality and Illusion will be on show on Monday the 10th of November at 7.30 pm.
Directed by C Nolan (UK/USA, 2010), Inception was also ritten by C Nolan and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Ken Watanabe. A captivating story of a thief who steals corporate secrets through use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a CEO that, in C Nolan’s words, explores "the idea of people sharing a dream space...That gives you the ability to access somebody's unconscious mind. What would that be used and abused for ?”.
All College students and guests are welcome.
Internet Access
A number of College students have recently reported problems in accessing the internet. The College has taken up the matter with Hypergrid, the company contracted last summer by EdISU to build an maintain the new Volta wife network. Hypergrid have explained that they require accurate details of each incident in order to take the correct remedial action and have supplied two forms - one in Italian and one in English - for students to fill and return. The forms will be placed in the Information Technology page of the website (link at the bottom of the home page) and are also available here (the form in Italian can be downloaded here; the form in English can be downloaded here).
Once conmpleted the form should be submitted to Hypergrid at the following email address <This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
The College is confident that this new system will result in prompt and effective assistance and support.
Alyssa Maloney
The College is pleased to welcome Alyssa Maloney, a young graduate in International Studies from the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon (Canada).
Alyssa will offer classes in English Language and Culture twice a week on Monday and Wednesday from Monday 3rd November until Wednesday the 17th of December 2014. The classes will draw from a range of topics including literary work, news items, gender, social and political issues. This is great opportunity for students of Volta to practice their skills in English and engage in interesting discussions on contemporary topics.
All members of the College are warmly invited to participate. Admission to the classes is free.
