Transatlantic Austerity 2010-13. A Comparative Analysis

17th November 2014.
Roberto Tamborini, Universita' di Trento, Italy

The seminar will take place in the College lecture theatre at 6.00 pm. The poster can be downloaded here.

The third lecture of the Volta series on The Financial Crisis, will address the role of fiscal policies, and specifically of fiscal austerity policies in the aftermath of the financial crisis. The different fiscal policies adopted by European countries and the USA in the years 2010-13, have enabled a comparative analysis of their impact on public finances, economic performance, employment, etc.  R Tamborini's thorough analysis demonstrates, against prevaling dogma, that fiscal austerity failed to improve public finances and promote economic recovery. The recession is not over yet in many countries and most notatbly across European countries. R Tamborini's study therefore is not only of academic interest but contains fundamental and practical lessons for current and future policy makimg.

Roberto Tamborini is Professor of Macroeconomics at the University of Trento and was formerly Professor of Economics at the University of Padua. His research interests are mainly concentrated on macroeconomic theories and policies, money and financial markets, policies and institutions.  He is a contributor to the online economic website RoubiniGlobalEconomics, founded by Nouriel Roubini. More information about R Tamborini' work can be found here (in Italian).
